Colin Dean’s music is deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, while drawing influences from world music and hip hop. His acoustic jazz group features Colin Dean on bass, Rachel Z on piano, Sean Nowell on Sax and Colin Stranahan on drums.

Their debut album “Shiwasu” was released in October 2010 and has received glowing reviews and radio airplay across the United States. They recently packed the Blue Note Jazz Club and Joe’s Pub in NYC.

Hip Hop

Colin frequently collaborates with a wide variety of hip hop artists, and has recently directed live productions for Nomadic Wax and the American Beatbox Championships. Some frequent collaborators include Hasan Salaam, Eternia, Maya Azucena and Chesney Snow. He has also performed with artists including Baba Israel, Bocafloja, The Reminders, Butterscotch, Baja of the Dry Eye Crew, and many more. He has shared the stage and opened for artists including Snoop Dog, KRS One, Rhazel, Bahamadia, MC Lyte, Jean Grey and more.

Musical Theatre

Colin is also accomplished as a bassist in New York Musical Theatre community. Recent projects include Matt Gould and Carmon Kreitzer’s new musical “Lempicka”, which is being presented by Yale Repertory Theatre and New Dramatists Full Stage USA program. He also recently performed for Riley Thomas’ new musical “Stuck”, which was featured in the 2012 New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) and won the Theater for the American Musical Prize, Award for Excellence. Another notable recent performance is Broadway Sings Michael Jackson which was presented at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge, which featured an array of young Broadway stars. Over the past year he has also been the resident bassist for Broadway Rhythm and Booze, which features young Broadway vocalists singing classic R&B, pop and original repertoire.

World Music

Colin is well versed in Latin and World Music. He studied and performed with Grammy nominated latin percussionist and band leader Bobby Sanabria for two years, and more recently has toured around the United States with singer Nuriya Almaya. Nuriya’s music is a high energy fusion of Latin, Middle Eastern and Jazz music.
